Reduce Itchy Eyes With These 5 Natural Remedies

Itchy eyes, also known as ocular pruritus, is an uncomfortable symptom that is usually accompanied by irritation, dryness and the sensation of having a particle inside the eye. Generally, it is associated with dryness – due to visual fatigue – or directly with computer vision syndrome or dry eye.

According to experts, it can be a symptom of eye infections and allergies, although it can also appear due to dermatological diseases and alterations of the lacrimal glands.

Eye itching or itching is usually sporadic and mild, and usually disappears in a matter of hours; however, some cases present complications and the discomfort may persist for several days.

1. Aloe vera juice for itchy eyes

Aloe vera is a plant to which various medicinal properties are attributed. According to beliefs, using its juice in a compress would have an anti-inflammatory effect, which could contribute to the relief of discomfort in the eyelids caused by itching.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of aloe vera (60 g).
  • ¼ cup of water (62 ml).
  • 4 ice cubes.

Preparation

  • Extract the tablespoons of aloe vera and mix them in the blender with the water and the ice cubes.

Application mode

  • After obtaining a cool mixture, dip a couple of pieces of cotton in the liquid and apply it on the eyelids, as a compress.
  • Let it act for 10 minutes and, if you consider it necessary, repeat its application 2 times a day.

2. Infusion of coriander seeds

According to some beliefs, the infusion of coriander seeds has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help relieve itchy eyes, especially when its origin is an infection in the external area.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds (10 g)
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml)

Preparation

  • Bring a cup of water to a boil and, when it comes to a boil, add the coriander seeds.
  • Let the drink sit at room temperature, until it is cold, and strain it.

Application mode

  • Perform an eye wash with the liquid.
  • You can also use this infusion to soak a compress.

3. Infusion of chamomile

  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • 2 tablespoons of chamomile flowers (20 g).

Preparation

  • Bring the cup of water to a boil and, when it reaches its boiling point, add the chamomile flowers.
  • Let the drink rest and, if you prefer to use it cold, put it in the refrigerator.

Application mode

  • Dip several pieces of cotton in the infusion and apply it directly on the eyelids, as a compress.

4. Cold milk with rose water

Although not scientifically proven, it is said that applying a natural milk toner with rose water could help to soothe itchy, irritated eyes in the eyelid area.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup of cold milk (62 ml).
  • 1 teaspoon of rose water (5 ml).

Preparation

  • Put the cold milk in a bowl and mix it with the rose water.

Application mode

  • Take a couple of cotton pads and moisten them with the remedy.
  • Put them on the closed eyelids and let them act for 10 or 15 minutes.

5. Infusion of fennel seeds

Fennel seeds have anti-inflammatory properties, which is why they are used to prepare a simple infusion that, after being applied, reduces itchy eyes in a matter of minutes, which  could be useful in case of visual stress and dryness.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of water (250 ml).
  • 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds (10 g).

Preparation

  • Add the fennel seeds to a cup of boiling water and cover.
  • Let them sit for 20 minutes, or until the liquid reaches a temperature suitable for use.

Application mode

  • Dip pieces of cotton in the infusion and apply it on the closed eyelids.
  • Let it act for 15 minutes, and use it 2 times a day.
